is an action-adventure where players take a third-person control of the game's protagonist, Dante where they engage heavily in fast-paced combat, platforming and environment-based puzzles. Dante's primary weapon is Death's Scythe that can be used in a series of combination attacks and finishing moves. The secondary weapon is his Holy Cross, that fires a volley of energy as a projectile attack. In addition, Dante can use numerous magic based attacks and abilities to help in combat that is challenged from a mana pool, many of which are obtained as the game progresses. Another form of combat that can be taken is the ability to take control of a large scale demon after it's rider has been killed, which can deal devastating attacks and often at times required to overcome a hazard or obstacle. When attempting dismounting the demon of it's master and during boss fights, a quick time event system is used, where player's must press the allocated button on screen in order to continue the chain of attacks, or be countered and wounded otherwise. Many attack combinations and abilities can be unlocked and/or upgraded in exchange for souls, an in-game currency that can be collected upon defeating enemies or locating soul fountains. Each of these purchasable skills fall into two categories, Holy (represented by blue orbs) and Unholy (represented by red orbs) skill trees. Initially at the start of the game, both skill trees equal at their start but can only allow Holy and Unholy abilities ready for purchase when Dante was gained enough holy or unholy experience.
Such experience is gather through the game's "Punish or Absolve" system where many enemies upon defeat can either be punished or absolved with the Holy Cross. Large portions of experience can also be found through punishing or absolving the damned souls of many famous figures in history that have appeared in The Divine Comedy where upon choosing to their fate, players enter a mini game where the characters' "sins" move towards the center of the screen, passing over action button symbols that require to be pressed once the sin in place. This allows a great rewards of souls and experience the more collected. Among combat, platforming; including swinging between ropes and climbing walls and environment-based puzzle sequences impair progresses. There are numerous hidden passages where biblical relics can be found and equipped to improve a certain abilities of Dante's.
